President’s Welcome

Welcome to the website of the University of Melbourne Actuarial Students’ Society.

I am very excited to welcome you all to our new website. This is one of the many avenues you have to learn everything there is to know about our society, what our vision is and how to get involved with us.

The fundamental aims of our club that have persisted since our origination are to provide an insight into the life of an actuary, build on technical & soft skills, and facilitate professional networking. To achieve these goals, we organise numerous events that vary in nature from fun and casual networking, to practical workshops and information sessions. We sincerely hope that the combined effect of attending these events is a more well-rounded, comprehensive understanding of the actuarial realm that will allow you to make an informed decision regarding your postgraduate pathway.

This year, we also have a renewed focus on providing additional professional guidance for students, and building a stronger sense of community for our relatively small cohort. In order to work towards these goals, we have revised our Mentoring Program in order to allow for recent graduates to return and mentor younger students. In addition, we will look to design and provide apparel for interested members toward the end of semester 1.

Our annual flagship event – Contact Night was held at Level 89, Eureka Tower in 2016. Over one hundred students were brought together with representatives from over 15 sponsor firms whilst indulging in canapes, drinks and fabulous views. A full list of our sponsors can be found by clicking the Sponsors tab, with dedicated pages for our Gold Sponsors.

On this website, you will find information about our wide variety of events, how to sign up as a member and also how to get involved with the society. On the academic side of things, we have included a number of useful links to clarify the often confusing actuarial pathway, along with our own database of reviews on subjects (both core and elective) that you are likely to encounter during your time at the University of Melbourne.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to Contact Us. You can also find us on Facebook and WeChat. Our 2017 committee is always around on campus and online so feel free to message us if you have any questions, or even if you just want to meet up for a chat. Once again, welcome to 2017 and I look forward to meeting you all at our events!
